Why Block Walls Fail

Concrete block foundations are strong, but they have a weakness: mortar joints. When the soil outside becomes saturated with water, it expands. This creates hydrostatic pressure that pushes against the wall. Over time, the mortar joints crack, the wall begins to bow inward, and water enters the hollow cores of the blocks. In Minnesota, this water freezes, expands, and shatters the blocks from the inside out.
